David "Dave" Joseph Malan, a cherished member of his community and a beloved family man, passed away on February 4, 2026, in Saint Louis County, Missouri. He was born on April 13, 1940, in Saint Louis City, Missouri.
Dave was a proud graduate of Roosevelt High School and maintained a strong connection with his alma mater through the Roosevelt High School Alumni Association. He furthered his education by earning a degree from the Washington University School of Architecture, which laid the foundation for a diverse and accomplished career in architecture. His passion for design was evident in his active participation in the Architect Monthly Club at CJ Muggs.
Throughout his life, Dave was deeply engaged in his community. He was a faithful member of St. Paul UCC Church in Oakville and proudly belonged to the Missouri Chapter of the Sierra Club. Beyond his professional and community endeavors, Dave had a vivid array of hobbies and interests. A lover of genealogy, he also enjoyed hiking, mountain climbing, and sports. His adventurous spirit led him to travel extensively, exploring all 50 states and enjoying memorable cruises.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn (nee Pagan) Malan. He was a dedicated father to Jeff Malan and Phil (Lucy) Malan, as well as a supportive stepfather to Ken (Jill) Gamlin, Laura McClure, and Crissy (Greg) Groppe. He was a dear brother to Paul Malan of Portland, Oregon, and Dan and Steve Malan, both of St. Louis, Missouri. In addition to his immediate family, Dave took great joy in his role as a cherished step-grandfather to Bryan (Tori) McClure, Maddy McClure, Brooke Groppe, Kyle Groppe, and Carson Gamlin. Dear sister-in-law Kathy Malan. Dear uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan (nee See) Malan, his parents, Millard and Helen (nee Zuroweste) Malan, his brothers, Charles Malan and Sam Malan, and his best friend, Julius Juracsik.
Visitation for David will be held on February 12, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 6:30 PM, all taking place at John L. Ziegenhein and Sons Funeral Homes - South County Chapel, located at 4830 Lemay Ferry Rd, St. Louis, MO 63129. Interment private.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the American Lung Association, 211 N. Broadway Suite 2035, Saint Louis, MO 63102.
As we celebrate the life of David Joseph Malan, we remember him for his unwavering commitment to his family, his community, and the passions that brought him joy. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
