Donald A. Cooney, born August 15, 1962, asleep with Jesus on February 20, 2026. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, James and Agnes Cooney, and his brother, Daniel Cooney. He was the dearest brother of Deborah (Frank) Mullen and David Cooney.
Don was an avid newspaper reader, especially the sports section. He enjoyed watching baseball, hockey, football, fishing, and golf on television. In his younger years, he found happiness in fishing trips and afternoons spent on the golf course. Don was friendly and curious, always happy to strike up a conversation. He took long walks through the neighborhood nearly every day and on occasion visited the mall for a leisurely stroll, window shopping, a bite at the food court, and a little people-watching. Summer cookouts and time spent laughing with friends at Don’s apartment complex meant a great deal to him. He also cherished family get-togethers and holiday celebrations, treasuring the laughter, good food, and time spent together. (Leftovers were much appreciated!)
Don grew up in Dogtown and attended St. James the Greater School before graduating from Soldan High School. He was proud of his Irish heritage and attended the Dogtown parade whenever he was able.
Throughout his working years, Don held various food service positions. He especially enjoyed his time working at the restaurant in the former Hyatt Regency Hotel (later Marriott) at Union Station, where he met travelers from across the country and around the world. He later worked in food preparation at Barnes-Jewish Hospital until his health required him to retire.
Besides his brother and sister, Donny is survived by his niece Melissa (Zach) Mason; great-nephew Hayden Mason and great-niece Hadley Mason; niece Amy Mullen; friends; and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Saturday morning, February 28, 2026 at 9:15 a.m., at St. James the Greater Church, 6401 Wade Ave., St. Louis MO 63139 with funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m., followed by interment at Resurrection Cemetery, 6901 Mackenzie Road, St. Louis, MO 63123. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James the Greater Church.
“Comforted by God’s promises, we trust that Don now rests in eternal peace and joy.”
