Obituary

Edward C. Niethe Asleep in Jesus on Thursday May 28, 2026, at the age of 79. Beloved husband of Sharon Niethe, nee Rose; devoted father of Dan (Kimberly) Niethe and Mike (Shauna) Niethe; cherished grandfather of Alex Niethe; dear brother of the late Fred (Dianne) Niethe; cherished uncle of Scott (Clare) Niethe, Michelle Niethe, and Matt (Shawna) Niethe; and precious son of the late Carl F. and Mary A, nee Kohoutek, Niethe. Ed was a cherished uncle, great-uncle, great-great-uncle, cousin, coach, second father, and friend to many. He is also survived by Sara (Mike) Bevolo, his former daughter-in-law, who remained a beloved member of the family and held a special place in his heart. The dedication to the relationships that Ed held was a blessing known to all who met him.

Ed’s journey began in St. Louis, where he cultivated a love for community that would define his life's work. He earned an associate’s degree from St. Louis University, a stepping stone that helped him embrace numerous leadership roles with wisdom and grace. At the time of his passing, Ed was proudly serving as the current President of St. Paul's Lutheran Church College Hill, guiding the congregation with heartfelt devotion and a clear vision for unity and service.

His passion for community engagement extended beyond the church walls. Ed was the former President of the Clifton Heights Neighborhood Association, where he worked tirelessly to foster neighborhood pride and improve the lives of residents. Additionally, he held the esteemed position of President of APICS, contributing his expertise and leadership to the organization’s mission.

A true sports enthusiast, Ed was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, a passion that brought joy and camaraderie to his life. His love of sports was not limited to spectating; he generously gave his time as a former baseball and soccer coach, guiding and mentoring young athletes with patience and encouragement. His influence in these roles shaped countless lives, instilling teamwork, discipline, and a love for the game. Ed also proudly served as the “coach” of Biggie’s Softball Team, which was a title he embraced with good‑natured enthusiasm. Though he never played a single inning, he was faithfully on the sidelines keeping score, enjoying a cold drink, and keeping all players' egos firmly in check. Ed's presence brought laughter, camaraderie, and a sense of togetherness that meant far more than the final score of any game.

Ed's warm spirit and dedication to others will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, leadership, and community pride that will continue to inspire.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to St. Paul's Lutheran - Church College Hill or The Backstoppers in Ed's honor.

Friends and family will gather to honor and remember Ed’s remarkable life through a visitation on June 11, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at John L. Ziegenhein and Sons South City Chapel, located at 7027 Gravois Ave, St. Louis, MO 63116. The celebration of his life will continue with a funeral service the following day, June 12, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church - College Hill, 2137 John Ave, St. Louis, MO 63107. A graveside service will follow at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum, 4947 W Florissant Ave, St. Louis, MO 63115, at 1:00 p.m.

We mourn our loss, but celebrate the time we had with Ed, and that he is now united with The Lord. May he rest in peace.
