Frank T. Zavadil died peacefully surrounded by family on July 17, 2026, at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Patricia (nee Moriarity), his son Timothy (Rena Kraut) of Minneapolis, his nephew John Collins (Paula) of Webster Groves, and his grandchildren Emily, Fletcher, and Megan Zavadil. He is preceded in death by his father Frank Zavadil, mother Dorothy Zavadil (nee Kuhlman), and sister Judith Collins (nee Zavadil).
Born and raised in south St. Louis, Frank spent his life dedicated to his community and family. A longtime member of St. Gabriel's and later St. Raphael's, Frank walked to Mass every Sunday. Frank was known for his dry humor, athleticism, stoicism and a legendary jump shot. His athletic prowess was surpassed only by his ability to metabolize as many donuts, Rold Gold pretzels, and mini-chip concretes as he desired.
Frank and Pat had a joyous social life both in St. Louis and in Englewood, Florida, where they spent winters playing bocce ball and dining by the water with friends. Frank's happiest times were spent in the presence of large groups of friends and family, and he loved to organize gatherings such as Christmas caroling parties for charity, a volleyball league for co-workers at the Post-Dispatch, and a walking club at his condo.
A graduate of Cleveland High School, Frank went on to play basketball for SLU, becoming a Billiken fan for life. He graduated from Wash U and later earned an MBA from Webster U. Basketball was a lifelong passion and he played well into his 70s. Regular Friday night softball games with friends (go Rebels!), weekly extended family dinners, and weekends at "the Clubhouse" made a full life for Frank and Pat, as well as visits to their son and grandchildren as their family grew. A devoted husband and cherished father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, his quiet strength and constancy are remembered with fondness and love.
In lieu of flowers the family appreciates memorials to Evelyn's House, Siteman Cancer Center or Cardinal Ritter Senior Services.
