James Van Schwent, a proud United States Army veteran, respected financial professional, devoted father and grandfather, and lifelong resident of the St. Louis area, passed away surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Jim is survived by his sons, Jason Matthew Schwent (Susan M. Amsler-Schwent) and Bryan James Schwent (Chelsea Sheppard); grandchildren Carter Schwent, Michael Amsler, Tyler Schwent, Eli Schwent, Nora Schwent, and Molly Schwent; his sister, Jacqueline Marie Maloney (née Schwent); and nephews Joseph Maloney Jr. (Linda), Christopher Maloney (Tracy Argyle), David Maloney (Jane), and Philip Maloney (Tina). Jim is also survived by his former wife, Helen Haskins, who remained an important part of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher Gilbert Schwent and Philomena Josephine Schwent (née Basler).

Born in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, Jim graduated from Valle Catholic High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Missouri–Columbia. A passionate supporter of Mizzou, he remained a loyal fan of Missouri Athletics throughout his life.

Jim honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded numerous military decorations in recognition of his courage, dedication, and distinguished service. Among his honors were the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device for Valor, the Combat Medical Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and several additional service ribbons and commendations earned throughout his military career. His military honors reflected both his exceptional professionalism as a combat medic and his willingness to place himself in harm's way while caring for fellow soldiers under enemy fire. As a veteran, he remained active in organizations supporting fellow servicemen and women, including the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

Following his military service, Jim enjoyed a distinguished career in trust administration and tax management. He worked with St. Louis Union Trust Company, Centerre Trust Company, and Boatmen's Trust Company as a Tax Administrator. He later continued his professional career with A.G. Edwards Trust Company, which became Wachovia and subsequently Wells Fargo, serving as a Trust Tax Administrator, Trust Administrator, and Senior Tax Administrator. Dedicated to professional excellence, Jim earned the designation of Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and completed numerous advanced financial and trust administration courses, including studies at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim was committed to serving his community. He volunteered with the United Way Allocation Committee, focusing on Early Childhood Development, and generously shared his time and expertise with causes important to him.

A faithful Catholic throughout his life, Jim worshipped at several parishes, including Assumption Catholic Church, St. Paul Catholic Church in Fenton, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Valley Park, St. Monica Catholic Church in Creve Coeur, and St. Francis Xavier (College) Church in St. Louis.

Jim found great joy in life's simple pleasures. He enjoyed traveling on bus tours throughout the United States and Europe, following financial markets and investing, cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals, and watching British television programs through BritBox. He was an active participant in Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson's and cherished creative projects, including producing a memorable film for his former spouse's 50th birthday.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated physicians, nurses, and staff of the Veterans Administration Jefferson Barracks Spinal Cord Injury Unit for the exceptional care, compassion, and support they provided over the past several years.

Jim will be remembered for his patriotism, faith, intelligence, kindness, perseverance, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy of service to his country, his profession, his community, and those he loved will continue to inspire all who knew him.
