John Panagiotis Plakotos

February 5, 1947 — April 27, 2025

John "Johnny the Greek" passed away peacefully, going home to be with God and his beloved family in heaven on April 27, 2025. He was a loving husband, exceptional father, and treasured Papou. Known for his fun-loving spirit, John lit up the room with his beautiful smile.

His heart was deeply rooted in Kalamata, Greece, his hometown, where his love for life began. He immigrated to the United States to New Orleans, LA in 1970, at the age of 21, and two weeks later, met the love of his life, Peggy and later had their daughter, Doria. He eventually moved with Peggy to St. Louis, MO to be with his daughter and to see his grandchildren grow up.

A well-known poker dealer in New Orleans, Johnny made a name for himself, earning the affectionate nickname "Johnny the Greek." He previously worked at Harrah's in New Orleans and will be missed by his old colleagues and patrons. He attended Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in New Orleans and was loved there by many. Friends and family alike cherished his generous and altruistic nature, and his sacrifices for his loved ones exemplified his selflessness.

His hobbies included fishing, watching the Greek news, cooking Greek food, playing poker, traveling to visit his beloved family in Greece, and spending time with his family in St. Louis.

Johnny's earthly body is now separated from his devoted wife, Peggy; his daughter, Doria; son-in-law, Michael; two wonderful grandsons, William and Matthew; his sisters, Maria and Voula; his brother, Theodore; and his nieces and nephews. He also leaves his furry companion, NOLA, the family dog (the boss), whom he eventually learned to like (and feed) and lovingly referred to as his "best customer."

Though Johnny the Greek may have left this world, his warmth and vibrant spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew him. You will forever remain in our hearts, and we will play music for you like you asked and try not to cry. We will always love you and remember how wise you were and all the things you taught us about life.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the The American Cancer Society.

Funeral services and burial will be privately held in Greece.
