Michael Jerome Baldwin entered into rest on Monday, August 17, 2026, at the age of 80. Beloved husband of and reunited with the late Cathy Jo Baldwin, nee LaDame; devoted father of Sarah (Brian Zurek) Baldwin; cherished grandfather of Isa (Noorah Basher) Baldwin Zurek, Ainsley Baldwin Zurek, and Breanna "B" Baldwin Zurek; and precious son of the late Jerome Donald Baldwin and the late Margaret Ann Baldwin Hambley, nee Gurnett. Michael is also survived by many other dear relatives and friends.
Michael was born in the springtime of 1946 in Rockford, Illinois, to parents Jerome and Margaret Ann Baldwin. The family, including his beloved grandmother, Aunt Katherine and Uncle Bill, would inspire Michael's confidence, lifelong love of learning and appreciation for the arts. During his time at Eastern Illinois University, Michael met Cathy Jo LaDame, and the two were married in March 1968, before Michael was called to serve his country in the United States Army.
While Michael was a claims rep for the Social Security Administration, he found great joy in teaching English part time at Lincoln Land Community College and assisting budding writers with development and edits. Throughout his life, Michael was known for expanding his knowledge and following artistic pursuits. He was an avid artist, reader, and writer. Michael was recognized as a notable poet, having multiple of his poems published throughout his life. He liked to collect classical music, always excited by the opportunity to experience new stories strung together through the chords and instruments. Michael was knowledgeable outside of the arts, too. He had a great love for European history, as well as military history and strategy.
Although Michael is remembered for his never-ending curiosity and love of learning, his legacy of love and inspiration remains to be seen in his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his honor are appreciated to Adopt a Pet of Benld, Illinois, where Michael was a long-time board member.
SERVICES: Friday, August 21, 2026, following a 9:00 AM meeting at John L. Ziegenhein & Sons South County Chapel and subsequent procession, Michael's cemetery ceremony will be held at 9:30 AM and burial in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. May Michael rest in peace.
