Robert Anthony “Tony” Avena passed into the arms of his Savior on February 26. His life was a beautiful combination of curiosity, adventure, service, and love, woven together with a sincere Christian faith.
Preceded in death by his parents the late Alexander and Jaqueline Avena. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Nancy; his treasured daughters, Christine Avena and Rebecca Haun; his favorite son-in-law, Justin Haun; and his cherished grandchildren, Aubrey and Amelia. He is also survived by his sister, Debra Clark; his brothers and sisters-in-law; his dear Aunt Laverne Hampel; and many nieces and nephews, including great-nieces and great-nephews. Tony had a wide circle of family and friends that reached around the world, all of whom will forever carry his joyful memory in their hearts.
A man of steadfast faith, Tony’s quiet and sincere Christianity was evident in the way he loved his family. He was a devoted and trustworthy husband who honored and cherished his beloved wife, Nancy. He was awestruck at the birth of his daughters, Christine and Becca, and embraced his role as a Christian father with both humor and deep seriousness. In later years, he was blessed to be cared for by those he had so faithfully loved.
From an early age, Tony was eager to understand how things worked. That drive was fostered by his family, the Boy Scouts, and his time as a member of Beta Sigma Psi in Rolla. He carried that curiosity into a long and meaningful career at McDonnell Douglas, where he contributed to the F/A-18 program. Whether he was fixing something around the house, lending his handyman skills to anyone in need, mentoring robotics students, or searching for the perfect chili recipe, he approached every task with joy and ingenuity.
Tony found great happiness outdoors. Hiking, skiing, camping, and exploring God’s creation were natural expressions of his adventurous spirit. Climbing in the Rockies was among his favorite experiences. He was always planning and training for the next adventure and was happiest when family and friends could join him.
Tony would want you to know that his soul has found peace in Christ alone. He would encourage you to faithfully love your families, continue learning, remain curious, and go take a hike.
Memorials may be made to Christ Memorial Lutheran Church or Voice of the Martyrs.
