Obituary

Thomas J. Ritter, born on September 22, 1943, in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church on May 11, 2026, in Saint Louis, Missouri. A distinguished and devoted member of his community, Thomas’s life was marked by dedication to family, faith, and service.

A proud graduate of Valle High School in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, Thomas furthered his education at the University of Missouri Columbia, where he completed his studies at the Accounting School. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a life enriched by commitment and integrity.

Throughout his lifetime, Thomas was known for his spirited involvement in various pursuits. An active participant in the Boy Scouts, he instilled values of leadership and camaraderie in young minds. He generously dedicated his time coaching a variety of sports at Assumption School, nurturing both athletic skills and character in countless children. Thomas’s passion for the outdoors was apparent to all who knew him, as was his craftsmanship as an avid woodworker — pursuits that reflected his love of nature and creativity.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife Martha Ritter, with whom he shared 55 cherished years of marriage. He also leaves behind his devoted sons, Mark and Blake, who carried forward his legacy of kindness and dedication. Thomas’s enduring familial bond extended to his dear sisters, Carol (Ralph) Mattingly and Brenda (Denis) Knock, who treasured him dearly. He also took immense pride and joy in being the cherished grandfather of Hanna Caroline Claire Ritter. Many friends who were fortunate to know Thomas remember him as a steadfast and caring companion.

Thomas was preceded in death by his loving parents, Francis X. and Reva M. (nee Kreitler) Ritter, whose memory he honored throughout his life.

A Memorial Gathering to celebrate Thomas’s life will be held on May 22, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at John L. Ziegenhein and Sons Funeral Homes - South County Chapel, located at 4830 Lemay Ferry Rd, St. Louis, MO 63129. A Memorial Mass will follow at Assumption Catholic Church at 4725 Mattis Rd, St. Louis, MO 63128, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Afterward, a burial will take place at Assumption Catholic Church Cemetery.
