John Volpo

John Joseph Volpo, 94 of Saint Louis, Missouri passed away into the presence of Jesus on Sunday, October 20, 2019.

John was born in Saint Louis, MO on March 19, 1925, the son of Guseppe and Maria Volpo.  He was a loving husband of 57 years to the late Helen (nee Shutz) Volpo; a loving father of Sue (Steve Stockmann) Bockstruck, John (Jody) Volpo, Rick (Lisa) Volpo, and Donna (Derin) Rominger; best grandpa of Stephanie (Doug), Joe (Shannon), Chris, Zach, Adam, Tim and Andrew; great grandfather of Paisley.  He was also a loving brother of Mary Jane Steffan and the late Joseph Volpo.

John was a U.S. Navy Veteran proudly serving his country as an aviation ordnance man second class from 1943-1946.  During World War II he was stationed in the South Pacific and was trained as a rear gunner on the Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber.

John’s Sacrament of Baptism started with Our Lady of Good Counsel in Bellefontaine Neighbors, MO.  John moved his family to Springfield, Illinois and he transferred his membership to Christ the King in Springfield, Illinois.  After John’s retirement he and his family moved back to Missouri and joined the St. Mark Catholic Church in Saint Louis, MO.  He faithfully attended church and was an active member.  Throughout the years, he served on multiple committees involving fundraising, initiating youth sports and community service.

John worked as an insurance agent for Metropolitan Life for several decades.  He moved his family to Springfield, Illinois when he became the President of Illinois Manufacturing Housing Association.  Later he retired from the State of Illinois in 1991 working for the Illinois State Lottery.

During his retirement, John enjoyed traveling with his wife to see his children and grandchildren.  Nothing made him smile more than being with his family and community friends. John’s legacy was instilling kindness, generosity and success to all of his children as well as everyone who he touched throughout life.  John will be remembered by all as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 28, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at John L. Ziegenhein & Sons 4830 Lemay Ferry Road (63129.  Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church, 4220 Ripa Avenue (63125).
