More about Judy

Judy Schlereth was born at home in rural Pike County Illinois on April 23, 1940, the third of six children. Weighing less than two pounds she spent the first six months in a hospital premature ward in Quincy, Illinois. As an infant she enjoyed sleeping until noon. She enjoyed playing with paper dolls cut from the Sears catalog with her sister, Jeanne. They spent hours setting the dolls in a circle around the living room heating stove. Another playtime activity was helping her mother clean kitchen cupboards. During the summer months it was not unusual to find Judy at the neighbor’s house by following her bare footprints on the dusty country road.

She attended a one room country school house walking through the woods and across a creek with her brothers and sisters. When her older sister began attending high school in the nearby village of Pearl, her parents moved all six children in order that everyone could attend the same high school. Judy participated in many activities including GAA, Girl’s Athletic Association. After high school in 1959 she cared for a senior neighbor, which allowed the senior to remain in her home. Judy attended a basketball game with a high school friend in 1962 and met Gene who was coaching basketball in a nearby school. The two dated for three years and married September 18, 1965.

Gene and Judy moved to St. Louis, Gene’s hometown, in 1967 when he accepted a teaching position at Hodgen Grade School. Judy joined the Anchor Chapter of the Eastern Star and quickly earned a reputation as a volunteer with this organization and helped many neighbors and friends. She held several offices in the chapter including Warder, Martha, Ruth, Marshall. Chaplain, Associate Conductress, Conductress, Associate Matron, and Worthy Matron in 1975, 1982, and 1996. She served as Grand Representative from 1983-1985 and in 1990 as District Deputy Grand Matron. Judy has been a member of the Missouri Show Me State Grand Representative Club. She is known as the “Cookie Lady” for her local chapter serving as Food Chairman many times. In her spare time she has worked at a local cleaners and a western apparel store on Gravois.

When Judy’s husband retired from teaching in 1996, she accompanied him to Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Florida to compete in the National Senior Olympic Games and also in the Missouri Senior Show Me Games. Since Gene’s death in July of 2015, Judy remained active in hours of volunteer work for her family, friends, neighbors, and Eastern Star.
