Marie Markowski

Markowski, Marie Vlatkovich, 97, passed peacefully on Sunday May 2, 2021 following a brief illness. She is survived by three sons: Jack (Patricia), Bob (Susie), and Tom (Kellye); seven grandchildren: Renee, John, Mike (Karen), Katie (Christo), Anna, Claira (Alex), and Aliy; and three great-grandchildren: Austin, Sofia and Harry. She is also survived by her dear big sister Emily and many loving and loved nieces and nephews.. Marie was preceded in death by her husband John.

Marie's life was dedicated to her family, her friends, and to serving others. A 1945 graduate of Webster College, she began work as a dietician in hospitals in New York and St. Louis, where she met her future husband John, a student at St Louis University Dental School. They had three sons. Following the untimely death of her husband in 1957, she began raising her sons as a single parent while working part time as a remedial reading teacher. After years of night and weekend classes, she earned a Masters Degree from St. Louis University and taught English for 23 years at Southwest and Soldan High Schools, also serving as Chairman of Southwest's English Department.

After her retirement, Marie focused on her family, lunches and travel with friends, and volunteer activities. She was active in Webster University's Alumni Association and received the Mary Elizabeth Newell award in 1985 for "loyalty, commitment and concern for Webster University." She was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels, OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program and taught ESL classes.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Services: John L. Ziegenhein & Sons Funeral Home, South County Chapel. Visitation Friday May 7, 5-9 pm. Funeral Mass Saturday May 8, 10 am at St. Mark Catholic Church, 4220 Ripa 63125. Interment following at Resurrection Cemetery.
