Maurice Schmidt

101, passed away peacefully on April 27th, 2020. Beloved husband; dear father of Donald R. (Katie) Schmidt, the late Tina (Ernie) Schmidt Lamke, Christina (Jack) Schmidt Hennen, and the late Robert (Joanne) Portell; loving grandfather and great grandfather; dear son of the late Wilbur and the late Georgia (nee Shurtz) Schmidt; beloved brother of the late Helen (the late Floyd) Short Hartley; dear uncle, great uncle, great-great uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend.

Maurice served in the Philippines in World War II and was a recipient of two bronze stars, a good conduct medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He retired from ACF Industries. He was a member of the Elks, the Moose Lodge, the Shriners, on the precinct committee in Jefferson County Illinois’ Republican Party, and was very active in the Long Prairie Christian Church in Mount Vernon, IL, where he served as treasurer for several years. Maurice loved hunting, camping, fishing, and taking his grandchildren out on the boat.

Memorial donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children or the American Cancer Society.

A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
