Rev. Gilbert "Gil" Bumb

July 23, 1929 — September 23, 2020

Rev. Gilbert F. Bumb, 91, entered into eternal rest on September 23, 2020.

Gil was born near Evansville, Indiana on July 23, 1929 to the late Dorothea (Kleitz) and John V. Bumb.  He graduated Reitz High School in 1946.  Gil then graduated from Evansville College in 1955.  He married Patricia (Leonard) on August 16, 1958 in St. Louis, Missouri.  Gil graduated from Eden Theological Seminary, and was ordained in 1959.

Throughout his years in the ministry, Gil was called to serve many churches.  His first call was to organize the mission congregation of St. Andrews UCC in Louisville, Kentucky; this included the construction of a beautiful sanctuary.  He next moved on to another mission assignment at Gethsemane UCC, a young church in Houston, Texas.  Gil then enjoyed a long tenure as the Associate Conference Minister for the Illinois South Conference in Highland, Illinois.  He spent several years serving Trinity UCC (St. Louis, Missouri), Emanuel UCC (Jackson, Missouri), Calvary UCC (St. Louis, Missouri) and St. Martin’s UCC (Dittmer, Missouri) as Interim Pastor.  Gil next accepted the call to serve St. John’s UCC in Weldon Springs, Missouri.  He finished his ministry career serving in several capacities at St. Lucas UCC in St. Louis, Missouri.  Gil touched many lives through his work.

Gil grew up on a farm, which cultivated his love of gardening.  He took extreme pride in his yard and garden and the hours he spent outside tending to his plants was one of his great joys in life.  Gil enjoyed playing golf and watching sports on the television, particularly Cardinals baseball.  Most of all, Gil cherished time with his family.  He was especially proud of his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments and never missed an opportunity to attend events to support them.

Gil is survived by his wife Patricia; children Rev. Cynthia S. Bumb, Mark Bumb Bremley, Brenda Lynn Mindock and Scott Andrew Bumb (Rene Williams); grandchildren Stephanie, Holden, Andrew, Khaila, Celeste, Jennifer and Abigail; sisters Erlene Dreier (Bob) and Agnes Kissel (Marlin); sister-in-law Janet Bumb; brother-in-law Bob Coppinger; 20 nieces and nephews; and a multitude of extended family and friends.

Gil was preceded in death by siblings John Bumb (Betty), Dorothy Helfert (Les), Marjorie Roettger (Mel), Mildred Barrett (Bill) and Daniel Bumb; sister-in-law Nancy Coppinger; nieces Barbara Barrett and Debra Kissel; and his parents.
